My CrossFit Open 15.5 Experience; The Finale
15.5, the final open WOD of the 2015 season.
For time, which means I have to complete everything in order to enter a score:
27 cal row
27 thrusters (Rx 65 lbs, scaled 45 lbs)
21 cal row
21 thrusters
15 cal row
15 thrusters
9 cal row
9 thrusters
Hey, did you know that thrusters spelled backwards is royal-pain-in-the-ass? Yep, that's exactly what it spells. And I own a 70 HP EvinRude so I don't need to mess with this rowing crap. However, I did willingly sign up for the Open so I'm damn well gonna finish this sucker!
As our women's class is preparing, Coach Salem is giving us general pointers and strategies. "...pace yourself [blah blah blah]....go right into full speed [blah blah blah]....you're gonna die....[blah blah]" wait, WHAT?! I've known this woman awhile and this is the first time she's hinted the possibility of expiration. Now she's telling me the end of my earthly existence could go down via thrusters and rowing. Fan-freakin'-tastic!
We paired up and I was with dear, sweet Robin. She gets stuck with me who, if Universities offered degrees in the field of Smart-Assness, I'd hold a PhD. I supposed I'd have to get my Bachelor of Science first, you know, my B.S. degree. Muahahahaha. Okay, okay back to 15.5. At first glance, this WOD doesn't sound so bad, but anyone who knows anything about this sport is keenly aware that WODs are farrrrrr more than they appear. As Robin's partner, part of my job is score keeping and the other part is encouragement. I encouraged her to stretch her rowing effort because a mako shark is tailing her. Ha, maybe I nearly killed us all with my imaginary aquatic creature. Nah, it's shark's fault so I'm off the hook...pun intended. I did make Robin laugh a few times. I'm not sure if she actually thought I was funny or if she secretly wanted me to shut up. But she got the workout done along with everyone else. No casualties. Good. That's good since no one had time to write their eulogies.
Here I go in the second heat. Not gonna lie; I was nervous. Rowing and thrusters are both leg torture and I struggle with low body strength. I opted for the scaled version again but it was still SUPER hard. My legs felt on the verge of spontaneously combusting. I just wanted to get it done and over with. Robin did a great job keeping me focused and reminding me about minuscule things like breathing and that the mako shark was after me this time. I still had to set the barbell down several times even though I paced myself. I probably took the longest, or close to the longest, of anyone, but 14 minutes and 32 seconds later I finished and I survived! Here is some footage if you're interested: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=937712236239317
So what did I learn? While this was most definitely a challenge and I knew I wasn't going to finish quickly, I concentrated on form and engaging my hips more in the thrusters. I need to work on my posture, too. I felt fairly strong on the rower. I also learned that I should take reflux medicine before starting 15.5. Climbing and descending stairs after this WOD is not wise. And under no circumstances allow your kid to convince you to dance to the Cha Cha Slide especially the part the goes "...Can you go down low? All the way to the floor...." Ugghhhhhhhhhhh!
Cheers and peace out from the 2015 CrossFit Open.

My CrossFit Open 15.4 Experience (& Extra Credit)
15.4 Rx version is an 8 min AMRAP (as many rounds/reps as possible) consisting of a varied ladder of HSPU (handstand push-ups) and cleans at 185 lb men/125 lb women. Those weights for the cleans are heavy, even for seasoned athletes. HSPU is apparently a new movement for the Open. HSPU is just how it sounds: stand on your head and push up with your arms, lifting your head off the ground.
The scaled version (which I did) is:
8 min AMRAP
10 push press 65 lbs
10 cleans 75 lbs
I can't deny I was a tad disappointed because in the Live Announcement (scroll to about 18:25) Dave Castro hinted the scaled version may have been regular push-ups rather than a push press. A push press is getting that 65 lb barbell from shoulder to overhead. I realize that movement resembles a HSPU more closely than a standard push-up, but I like those and am fairly good at them. Cleans are getting the 75 lb barbell from the ground to shoulder. (See this link under week 4 for more explanation on the movements).
Well, I knew this was going to be a very challenging WOD for me with two weightlifting movements. I was wrong: it was extremely challenging and quite the lung burner. My goal was to get through three full rounds. And guess what? I DID IT! I completed 62 reps which is three full rounds plus two extra push presses. This was certainly a testament to upper body strength. I was thankful for this because......
I signed up for a 3 mile run/race the following day. Yes, I must be crazy. The CrossFit Open and a race?! Originally, I only signed up for the run with the intention of skipping the Open this year. I made a semi-last minute decision to go ahead and join. I'm glad 15.3 (wall balls and jump rope, remember?) was last week and not this week so my legs were saved. Unfortunately, I didn't do as well in the run as I would have liked. I was aiming to finish in under 30 minutes, but I got plagued with the dreaded side stitch pretty early on and couldn't get rid of. Sometimes I can run and/or breathe them out, but it wasn't happening this time. Frustrating. I finished about 32:45 and it was a struggle to get that. But I was happy to get some exercise and some friends happened to be there and they cheered me on. The weather was unpredictable that day, but for the race it was decent. It had rained earlier so the air was damp, cool, and comforting. However, the wind picked up something fierce afterwards. I ran during this little pocket of calm weather which, I suppose, was especially for the event. It's so funny how everything works itself out.

Musical Memories
Munchkin and I visit Great-Grandma (that is not her in the photo, it was just the only snapshot I got that day) at her retirement community on Saturday, March 14th. The Royal Lilac Court Princesses and Queen were visiting and, uh, G does NOT pass up a chance to mingle with princesses. I thought it started at 1 pm but was mistaken and it actually started at 2 pm. We had this hour to kill and luckily the retirement community was celebrating St. Patrick's Day with Irish jigs played by a live band and Irish step-dancers performed, too.
You know how you hear a song and are instantly transported backwards in time to some random event that you correlate with that song? I saw that happen with 70, 80, and 90+ year olds. The band struck up "My Wild Irish Rose." There was simultaneous gasps and I could sense the flashbacks manifesting and swooning over the residents. They all sang along, including my Grandma. I wondered what memorable event(s) were triggered by this melody: A wedding, a dinner party, a school dance? Did they image the song as the band played it, or were they replaying the soft whisper of static penetrating from their parents' record player? I supposed it isn't necessary to be privy to those memories. The aura of what I witnessed touch me. Something so simple as a melody can jog the most joyful and possibly forgotten moments. I'm so thankful I made the mistake about the event time, otherwise, this experience would have only passed as a blip on life's timeline.

My CrossFit Open 15.3 Experience
Well, it sucked. 15.3 was kind-of a surprise. It started with muscle ups.
14 min AMRAP (as many reps/rounds as possible)
7 muscle-ups
50 wall balls (14 lb to 9' target)
100 double unders
Not everyone can do a muscle up, myself included. Even if I had previously succeeded at one, it doesn't mean I can perform more anytime I want. They take continual practice and upkeep. I've come close, and honestly they are fun to attempt. I enjoy swinging on the rings. I like the rush of flying in the air and the momentary suspended "floating" feeling before trying to flick my body up and over the rings.
For 14 minutes with a group of other fabulous women, we tried to achieve the coveted muscle up. Many of us were almost there, but in order to count it must be complete. I managed to make it upright to my armpit area, but still wasn't high enough over those rings to push myself upwards. However, I felt like I was closing the gap on my path to a muscle up which is progress. I'm not unhappy with my effort and like I mentioned, they're fun to try anyways. By the end we were all rubbing various arm joints. That's usually a good sign to take a break (well, for me anyhow.)
We all had to record scores on the scaled version of 15.3:
14 min AMRAP
50 wall balls (10 lb to 9' target)
200 single jump ropes
Yeah, 14 mins of BLECH! Endurance wise, I'm not efficient at either; they suck the life out of me pretty quick. Plus, I was disappointed that the third element was omitted rather than scaled. Why not a few push-ups or weighted sit-ups in place of the muscle ups? Well, at least wall balls and jump roping were in the same workout so they probably won't be in either of two remaining 2015 Open WODs...knock on wood.
I got through 2 full rounds plus 39 wall balls. That equals 539 reps. Which I know sounds like a lot, but it probably wasn't. I have myself to blame for this one. I neglected eating wholesome foods the days beforehand, slacked on my water consumption, and was simply all around lazy (I picked up a book and read about 200 pages in a day). The excitement and anticipation wasn't in me this time and I'm okay with that. I suppose I have to be if I'm owning up to my mistakes. In addition, my mindset needs to be adjusted going into future WODs. I'm going to be more aware of this and strive to change it for the better. There's always room for growth!

My CrossFit Open 15.2 Experience
Ahhh....It's week two of five of the CrossFit Open. This week's WOD is a repeat from last year. To quote Dave Castro (the evil villain who eats, sleeps, and breathes the fire that ignites the Open), "15.2 is 14.2."
Every 3 minutes for as long as possible complete:
From 0:00-3:00
2 rounds of:
10 overhead squats (95 lb men / 65 lb women.)
10 chest-to-bar pull-ups
From 3:00-6:00
2 rounds of:
12 overhead squats (95 / 65 lb.)
12 chest-to-bar pull-ups
From 6:00-9:00
2 rounds of:
14 overhead squats (95 / 65 lb.)
14 chest-to-bar pull-ups
Etc., following same pattern until you fail to complete both rounds
Well I ran into this problem last year: The stupid OHS! At that time I had never performed one that heavy. Somehow I managed 3 reps. Yeah, that's all I got. It was frustrating because I CAN DO CHEST-TO-BAR PULL-UPS!!! So here I am a year later facing the same dilemma. I can do 65 lb OHS somewhat more easily now but I didn't think I could even get one round in the first three minutes, let alone two. 65 lbs is still quite heavy for me for an OHS (my 1 rep max is 75 lb). There's another factor: I've got a semi-messed up shoulder. I will leave out the details for now, but it's caused some grief over the last few months. Stuff that's slightly heavy for me really aggravates it. Thankfully, our Evil Villain has softened for 2015 and created a scaled version which I was beyond excited about:
Every 3 minutes for as long as possible complete:
From 0:00-3:00
2 rounds of:
6 overhead squats (65 lb men/ 45 women lb.)
6 chin-over-bar pull-ups
From 3:00-6:00
2 rounds of:
8 overhead squats (65 / 45 lb.)
8 chin-over-bar pull-ups
From 6:00-9:00
2 rounds of:
10 overhead squats (65 / 45 lb.)
10 chin-over-bar pull-ups
Etc., following same pattern until you fail to complete both rounds
45 lbs is manageable yet still challenging and regular pull-ups....my favorite! And I'm good at them (or I like to think I'm good at them)! The first sets starts at 6 reps rather than 10 in the Rx version so that's helpful, too. My goal was to reach the fourth set with 12 reps in it.
The first set of rounds was fairly easy. I went slower cause it's essentially a "death by" workout of OHS and pull-ups so I didn't want to gas myself too quickly. I kept the slower pace for the second set, too. I also started noticing that the other competitors who already finished began gathering to watch. (Oh goodie....now there's multiple sets of lively eyeballs upon me.) About halfway through the third set I started to get really tired. I wanted it to be over. I remembered my goal to get to the fourth set. I made the last pull-up with a few seconds left. Whew!....Ok, now my lungs are burning. Hello! Oxygen what the hell is taking you so long?! Life, please return back to my airways, like, pronto! I vaguely heard my good buddy, Katie, who was keeping score, tell me to keep going as I was at my desired set. I gritted my teeth, gripped the barbell and snatched it overhead. 45 lbs is now feeling like twice that. Twelve more times I went down and up stabilizing the barbell with whatever fibers remaining that still worked. Such relief to put down that thing! With tiny beads of sweat dotting my skin, I kipped my chin over the monkey bar above my head eleven more times. Then the timer went off. I splatted to the floor in euphoric release awaiting the arrival of oxygen in regular smooth intervals; you know, normal humanoid breathing. The floor felt cool on my hot skin. Katie plopped my tumbler of lime-infused water on my belly. "Here's your water," she said. Just what I needed after surviving death-by OHS and pull-ups!
I was ecstatic to accomplish 119 reps in twelve minutes.
I was ecstatic to accomplish 119 reps in twelve minutes.
But I'm not gonna lie: the following day I was sore. My muscles ached and my shoulder is feeling it. I hope it recovers over the weekend as I'm looking forward to next week's Open WOD. I'll get done what I can get done with what my body will allow. However, I would like a break from pull-ups.

My CrossFit Open 15.1 Experience
The CrossFit Games are upon us again. I signed up for the Open again. If you aren't familiar, the CrossFit Open has one workout, or WOD, each week for five weeks, and is the qualifier for those who wish to advance to Regional Competitions. If placing there, goes on to the official Fittest On Earth world competition. Sooooo obviously I'm not even remotely close to the competing bracket, nor am I really that interested in achieving that. But, the Open is also for those who want to see where they stack up against the general world of CrossFitting.
There is a scaled portion this time so I decided to give it a go. Last year was my first go around at the Open and I felt like most of the workouts were beyond my level of fitness due to the weights involve. Lets face it: I'm a small petite person. I only weigh about 115 lbs (sometimes less). However, I excel at the gymnastic-y stuff about Crossfit: Pull-ups, push-ups, rope-climbing, toes-to-bar, etc. Believe it or not, I've become self-conscious and almost embarrassed about my size. I've had strangers point out how small and skinny I am and say how "lucky" or "glamorous" it must be. I don't need to be reminded about my petite stature. I don't take those comments as compliments because, really, should we be pointing out others' sizes all the time? Didn't we learn in kindergarten that people come in "all shapes and sizes?" I would like to be taller and more average in size just as another person who wishes to be smaller and more average. Some things we can't change.
Back to the CrossFit talk:
The first week began on Thursday evening and athletes have until 5pm on Monday to complete the WOD and submit scores. Here is the WOD for 15.1 (2015.week 1 in case that wasn't clear):
The first week began on Thursday evening and athletes have until 5pm on Monday to complete the WOD and submit scores. Here is the WOD for 15.1 (2015.week 1 in case that wasn't clear):
9 Min AMRAP (as many rounds as possible)
15 Toes to bar
10 deadlifts 75 lbs
5 snatches 75 lbs
Then immediately afterwards you have 6 mins to find 1 rep max clean and jerk.
I can do the Toes to bar and the 75 lb deadlift. I cannot perform a 75 lb snatch (straight from ground to an overhead position in one motion). I can't even come close. I think my 1 rep max is 65 lbs and it wasn't pretty.
The scaled version is hanging knee raises and a weight of 55 lbs. I can do that. However, that snatch weight is still challenging for me. It sucked that it was only knee raises because I can do Toes to bar, but it is what it is. Obviously, I struggled most with the snatches. In the end, I made it through 4 full rounds plus 27 extra reps (3 reps shy of 5 full rounds for a total of 147 reps). The last 6 mins to find my 1 rep max clean and jerk was intense for everyone, including me. My previous max was 90 lbs and I got 85 lbs! I think that's good considering I had to do it right after the other taxing WOD. There were people encouraging me the entire time, some that didn't even personally know me. When I hit my 85 lb clean and jerk, I heard others roaring, clapping, and cheering. I felt empowered.
I tried twice for 95 lb clean and jerk. I cleaned it both times on the first tries which, in the past, has been a huge struggle. (I'm excited for my progress on just the cleans.) I just couldn't push the weight overhead. I'm happy with what I achieved, though!

Last quote for January from Bill Nye
"Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't." ~Bill Nye
I find this quote interesting because it attempts to eliminate negativeness that comes with comparing intelligence. You may be a genius as a brain surgeon, but that doesn't mean you know how to fix a car. I suppose the reverse of this is true as well: You may know someone who is terrible at money managing, which would give you an idea of what not to do with yours. This quote is sort-of an open-ended food for thought. How do you interpret it?

Mother Teresa Quote
“If you can't feed a hundred people, feed just one.”
~Mother Teresa
This quote comes to mind as of recently because of the rising need for food for schoolchildren. Our local school district has a food backpack program so low income students have meals on the weekends. Yes, you heard that correctly. Sadly, kids aren't always getting fed on the weekends. Let me back up a bit:
As you may already know, many districts offer free breakfast and lunches to income qualifying families. (Proper nutrition equals better learning.) It would be reasonable to assume that these families also qualify for welfare, Medicaid, food stamps and/or WIC and are using them to their advantage. It is difficult to comprehend that even with government assistance, still children go hungry at home. In order to alleviate this, schools also provide food that is distributed discreetly into their backpacks. Before Christmas break, our school district asked for help replenishing their food bank with items like peanut butter, cereal, etc. I gathered a few extra items on my next grocery trip and dropped them off. I was astounded to learn that this food backpack program is serving over 100 children! Questions that popped into my head: With all the assistance they are already receiving, why aren't these kids getting fed? Is there even an adult around to prepare a meal for them? What is preventing these families from utilizing food banks already in place and relying on the schools? Whatever the answers may be, the bottom line is children are going hungry. Compassion doesn't come entirely natural to me, but this is really tugging on my heart strings. I've been bringing items every few weeks to the school district and plan to do so as our budget allows.
There are 100 needy kids. I felt as though the items I initially dropped off may only feed a single child. My donation was only serving a fraction of the need. Like Mother Teresa's quote: If I can't feed all, I can support one. I believe her message is that a seemingly small effort will make a big difference for another. I hope that holds true.

Jan 11 Quote Choice From Teddy Roosevelt
"If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month." ~Theodore Roosevelt
Boy, isn't that the truth! It's rather tiresome to hear people sulk and mope about their lives when they are capable of changing it. For example: We hear of criminals blaming their absurd behavior, leading to arrests, etc., on perceived racial prejudices rather than take account for their actions. Blame is quick to fall on another. That tactic may hold up for a short while, but responsibility is eventually inevitable. After all, we are all in charge of ourselves. This seems like a "duh" statement but I'm frequently aghast at the lack of common sense depleting this value.
Why are some so dependent on others for happiness? Why can't we be happy with what we have and strive to work for what is absent? Since when is it customary for basic responsibility to be diverted from oneself and pawned on another? Happiness and responsibility cannot be bought nor provided. They are already inside us. It's up to us to use them wisely and sensibly.
Duh.

Quote for January 4, 2015
With the December photo challenge behind me I needed another writing challenge of some sort for January. I decided I would pick some quotes I have lying around and write about why they appeal to me. My goal is to do this each week; perhaps twice a week if I'm feeling it. With all the snow coming down, I may be suffering from plenty of cabin fever to do that. I will try to include a Pinterest link in case anyone would like to save the quotes shared.
The first one I'm sharing is by Diane Ackerman:
The first one I'm sharing is by Diane Ackerman:
"I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I've just lived the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well."
Admittedly, I don't know who Diane Ackerman is. For some reason I thought she was a news journalist, but she is an "poet, essayist, and naturalist" according to her website. I may have to borrow some of her material from the library.
I feel this quote easily hits home for anyone. What is living the width of our life? To each their own, of course, but it clearly means living more than your day-to-day life and/or experiencing past your ordinary routine. Take a risk; whatever that may mean for you. Try a new hobby, join a social group, take a small day trip to a place you've not been before. Perhaps it simply means ordering a latte from that the neighborhood coffee shop you haven't been to in ages. Doing the same things day in and day out will surely get you through life, but it won't make it all that fulfilling. Veer off your regular path once in a while for fun! Like I said, to each their own, but I think the concept applies to most people, just apply it as necessary.

December Photo Challenge: Day 31; New Year's Eve
Dec 31: New Year's Eve
I've never been one to extravagantly celebrate NYE. I'm not the party or drinking type, T is usually working, and I'm wiped out since, you know, I survived an entire year!
Today was a weird day: I went to the gym, then was planning to meet friends at the other end of town with our kiddos. Unfortunately, I got the days mixed up. So here G and I are on the opposite end of town needing something else to do. I suggested we go to the nearby mall and she could get some energy out on the play area. As it turned out, that entire side of the building is under construction! The malls have these trolley rides and G sighed and asked, "Can we ride the train?" Yeah, we can ride the train today. Why not? I have managed to foil all our other plans! She must've been excited about this because she gave me some goofy selfie poses. Enjoy.

December Photo Challenge: Day 30; Night
Photo copyrighted by Jennifer Miller
Dec 30: Night
It's currently 13 degrees out. In case you live in a luxurious climate, 13 degrees feels like invisible icicle daggers. I mentioned before, we have enjoyed the warm spell in the 50's, then it tanked to a low of -14 degrees last night. What happened to a grace period?! Anyway, my point was that I wasn't about to spend more time out in the night cold than I had to in order to achieve a photo challenge post. We are preparing the 12.5 lb steelhead T caught from the Snake River earlier this month. The sun had set when we threw them on the grill so voila! there's a night photograph! Even the grill itself looks a little frosty. No time for more details, dinner's ready.....

December Photo Challenge: Day 28 & 29; Scarf & Smiles With A Friend
Dec 28: Scarf
Aaah! I'm getting behind. I haven't taken photos for the specific days so I just had to wing it. This was from the other day when she was rolling the body parts for the snowman. I added some creative touches.

Dec 27: Fun
Grandpa arrived in town late last night to avoid the winter storm over the mountain pass. Which also meant we finally got some real snow on the opposite side of the state. You know, the kind we're known for where one can actually play in. G and Grandpa enjoyed sledding and a short-lived snowball fight because that's when I suggested they build a snowman which turned out rather cute. I like how he's kindergarten-sized!

December Photo Challenge: Day 26; Bundled Up

Dec 26: Bundled Up
We are experiencing a rather warm season so far (in the 50's at times) hence there haven't been too many opportunities that warrant getting bundled up. It is supposed to get cold over the next few days, but we have enjoyed the warm spell for the time being. My sister gave me a new pair of slippers at our Christmas Eve get together, so here I am wearing them with my jammies attempting to catch Santa Claus. Can you spot the milk that G left out for him?
As I indicated my favorite holiday movie is It's A Wonderful Life. I had yet to watch the whole thing in one sitting, so the night of Christmas I decided to switch it on. I asked T if he'd care to watch it with me. "Nope," was the answer I got.
"Why," I inquired. "I thought you liked that movie."
"I do."Insert confusion. "So what's the problem?"
"Because it makes me cry!"
Fa la la la ha ha ha! He's a softy for that film, too!

December Photo Challenge: Day 25; Christmas Morning
Photo copyrighted by Jennifer Miller
Dec 25: Christmas Morning
We opened presents like any family this morning, but, while this is not superbly composed, I wanted today's photo be our dog with his Christmas chewy. He is 13 years old and is showing his age more and more especially within the past 6 months. He takes joint supplements and arthritis medication but is continues to have difficulty getting around. It's not a dire situation yet, but, while we are certainly hoping not, we realize this could possibly be his last Christmas. Pooch gets his own stocking, too, which is normally filled with chewies or treats of holiday colors. This year he got red and green candy cane shaped ones hand-picked by G. He cannot wait to get his teeth on those! Most fellow pet owners agree, that their animals enjoy Christmas morning just as much as the rest of the household.
Speaking of dogs, the neighbors' dog barked throughout the entire morning. I have asked them before not to allow their animals to remain outdoors for extended periods of time due to this annoyance. Frustrating!
I didn't intend to come across as Negative Nancy with this entry, but it is weighing on our minds and I felt the pooch deserved to be in the spotlight.

Dec 24: Favorite Holiday Tradition
We really don't have holiday traditions, but on Christmas Eve we have a seafood feast with Mom, Grandma, and Auntie. Mom made a fisherman's stew, scallops, and a shrimp and vegetable pasta. We brought crappie, halibut, skillet biscuit bread, and chocolate fudge. There is also a gift exchange and I gave Grandma her copy of 41: A Portrait Of My Father which I discussed earlier as well as a personalized calendar. I give her a calendar every year, but she is always surprised as she unwraps it.

Nescafe Review

I'm a member of Smiley360.com where I share my honest feedback in exchange for free product. I've recently tried the Nescafe with Coffeemate which is like a cocoa mix but with the coffee/creamer flavor. It reminds me of the cafe au lait served at Cafe du Monde. I've tried instant coffee before, but its incredibly convenient that this comes as a 2-for-1 and it's deliciously addicting! I can't wait to take it camping! (I refuse to rough it without my coffee!) I don't think there is much to write about here. Just about everyone has a few colorful boxes under a trimmed tree. The wee ones are glistening with anticipation of Santa's arrival in a couple days...at least mine is.
The package wrapped in white tissue paper is a gift to Daddy made by G in school. I haven't a clue what it contains other than that it's "breakable." From a previous entry I mention the kiddo wrapping her own presents, of which a few she used newspaper. Can you spot one?
When I look at all the presents I'm reminded of our old cat, who died a couple years ago. She loved Christmas morning and jumping in the crumbled up paper and discarded bows. We miss her terribly. A special paw-shaped ornament with her picture is hanging on the front of the tree so that she can 'watch' the action come Dec 25th.

December Photo Challenge: Day 22; Red
Photo copyrighted by Jennifer Miller
Dec 22: Red
I know what you're thinking: That's not something red. Well, George HW Bush was a Republican....LOOPHOLE!
I've moved on to yet another book. Recently, I read an article in Parade magazine (the one from the newspaper) about George HW Bush and how he sky dived on his 90th birthday. It was essentially a piece advertising the biography written by his son, George W. Bush. At any rate, it was intriguing to me and I ordered a copy as a Christmas gift for someone. I should've ordered a copy of my own, but instead I just placed a hold at the local library. I was something like fifteenth on the wait list and was finally able to pick up a copy last week.
The 1988 presidential election is the first one I can conscientiously remember. I was attending third grade and the school conducted it's own student presidential election. Our choices were the Republican Vice President George HW Bush or Democrat Michael Dukakis. I certainly didn't comprehend more than a smidgen of politics at the time, but the nation was soon to acquire a new leader and it seemed thrilling to an eight year old kid. To this day voting is still exciting to me. I make an effort to cast my ballot each and every time. I research and educate myself on candidates. Why not? Women fought hard to earn the right to vote, and it certainly isn't honoring those before me who sacrificed in order to give future generations that privilege.
In the first few chapters of 41: A Portrait Of My Father I learned that George HW Bush was shot down by enemy forces in WWII and was rescued by a submarine, one of his squadron comrades was from Spokane WA, and he had a daughter who died of childhood leukemia. He also serves as US Ambassador to China and ran the CIA. I've gotten as far in the novel to when he has just been elected president. It's an interesting part of history and gives readers a peek at who George HW Bush was personally, not only professionally.

December Photo Challenge: Day 21; My View Right Now

Dec 21: My View Right Now
I was a little confused as to what "my view" should entail. Am I supposed to be cuddled up in a mountain lodge sipping cocoa while watching the snow fall? Relaxing at a tropical getaway making you all jealous of warm weather? As I sat down to write the previous entry, I realized I needed to capture a photo for this challenge. So I present my view of (drum roll please): The Newspaper Waiting For Me To Get Out Of My Pajamas And Retrieve It.
Make it a great day! :)

Dec 20: Merry & Bright
I'm going to write about our Journey To The North Pole cruise on Lake Coeur d'Alene which was actually on Dec 7th. It seemed to fit "merry and bright" so I'm rollin' with it.
We've heard all about this cruise and have even walked the CDA boardwalk to look at the animated lights (the ones we can see anyways) but have never taken the boat ride. It's a 40 minute cruise from the CDA Resort Marina to the North Pole (a little cove a short distance away) where Santa Claus is waiting. When instructed, we walked out onto the deck and listen to Santa from his little station read names from his naughty or nice list. G made the nice list in which she was thrilled. We departed the North Pole as Santa illuminated his Christmas Tree and set off fireworks. On the return trip, the kids got to write a letter to Santa which an elf delivers the Big Guy.
Below are some shots of the animated light show that is part of the cruise. The quality isn't all that great since I had to take them from inside the boat. You can still see Santa and his reindeer and even the Grinch made an appearance!

The Shops across the street from CDA Resort are annually decorated for Christmas. A cheery polar bear, hip-hop dancing gingerbread man, and a silent snowman greeted shoppers and cruisers. Here is munchkin in the Journey To The North Pole sleigh with the polar bear.

December Photo Challenge: Day 19; Tree Topper
Photo copyrighted by Jennifer Miller
Dec 19: Tree Topper
Once again, this is something on the tree that is quite special. This belonged to my Dad's parents who I never got the chance to meet (they both died before I was born). A couple Christmases ago, Dad passed it on to us as we didn't own a topper. Our tree top was always bare because I couldn't find anything I liked. Even with options like fiber optics and twinkling LEDs, everything I saw in the stores seemed cheesy, tacky, or just plain ugly. I think the universe was keeping me patient that something better was in store.
This vintage piece is one of spun glass, which I don't believe are made any longer. If I'm mistaken then they are few and far between. I had to include a picture of the box, too, as some of the phrases printed on it are interesting: "Beautify your tree," "Fire-proof," "Proper protection for hands..." I cannot locate a date on the box, but on the lid flap it says Manufactured by National Tinsel Mfg. Co. New York, NY.
It may not be hip, chic, or in-style, but it was once important to people who are important to me. I think that trumps any modern marvel.

December Photo Challenge: Day 18; Holiday Outfit

Dec 18: Holiday Outfit
Okay. Who buys a specific holiday outfit? Anyone who knows me is aware I buy whatever is on sale....at Cabela's. Or I wait until my sister cleans out her closet. I detest clothes shopping and to buy an outfit simply in celebration of a holiday seems wasteful to me. If I were to attend a fancy gathering and not have existing attire, well, that would be different. However, I don't see anything wrong with wearing a nice sweater I wore for the season.
I snapped a quick photo of my daughter's dress with a jingle bell necklace for the simple purpose of complying with a the challenge.

December Photo Challenge: Day 17; A Beautiful Sight
Photo copyrighted by Jennifer Miller
Dec 17, A Beautiful Sight
Today, G received an award at school for the Caring Character Trait. Her teacher informed us ahead of time she was receiving an award but we didn't know what for, and it was a complete surprise to her. We watched her proudly walk up the stage's steps and smile as the plaque was presented to her. We don't know specifically what she did to achieve Caring status, but it's great to know she displays this at school. So the Beautiful Sight isn't her holding a tangible award, but the act of caring and kindness she possesses inside, yet allows to shine on the outside. Way to go, Kid!

Dec 16: Wreath
I've had what seems like a long day. Not bad or stressful, just a lot going on so I'm tired and I think it shows through the photo. I see fuzziness from camera shake and, truthfully, I didn't spend much time on this one. I don't have anything specific to write about so I'm signing off.

December Photo Challenge: Day 15 Favorite Holiday Movie
Photo copyrighted by Jennifer Miller
Dec 15th's photo challenge is favorite holiday movie. Yeah, I'm a sucker for It's A Wonderful Life. Most people are familiar with it, but in case you're not, it's a wholesome story about George Bailey (played by James Stewart) who falls to unfortunate circumstances and feels he cannot make it right and that his life is now worthless. His guardian angel, Clarence, is sent down from heaven with a "gift." He's to convince George that his good influence on others has positively impacted their lives. It was made in 1947, so hence the black and white format. The music sounds a little bugle-y and the women's voices are soft and feathery. I think it adds ambiance to the viewing experience. It's even a little science-fiction-like because we see how one person or deed can affect an entire timeline.
One of my favorite lines is in the beginning when the angels are talking amongst themselves. Clarence is called over and told he is being sent to earth to help George Bailey. He asks, "Why, is he sick?" Another angel responds, "No. Worse, he's discouraged." Worse, he's discouraged. Discouragement is a powerful emotional state when you think about it. When we're troubled, it's on our minds and can very well consume our thoughts so that the good and pure actions and things around us go unnoticed. The film reminds us to be grateful for what we do have and have hope in any situation.
I think one of the most wise and mysterious characters in It's A Wonderful Life is George Bailey's father. He seems to observe the lives of those around him with quiet intelligence and understanding. George, and most folks, didn't understand why he operated the Building & Loan so unselfishly. I think a large part of George coming to terms with himself, is realizing the contentment his father found on probably a similar life path and discovering what was truly important.
I also like that movies of this era are clean. No profanity, violence, or risque scenes. Some of the storylines of today's movies or even novels are down right disgusting. Violence and gore is just about everywhere, including television. "Bad words" or scenes not suitable for general TV used to be censored out, but no longer. It's preying on society into making us believe these actions are normal. I enjoy action or suspenseful movies just as much as anyone, but I do feel it's gone overboard. I suppose I could continue to expand my discouraging thoughts on modern media, but perhaps that would be best left for another day. For now, I'm going to let this uplifting film remind me of what I can be grateful for in my own life.

Dimetapp Cold/Cough Review
I am a member of smiley360.com where I can try and review products for free in exchange for feedback. I recently got the mission for Children's Dimetapp Cold/Cough. I haven't yet tried it as my daughter hasn't been sick since receiving it (knock on wood). However, I don't like that a cold/cough medicine contains an antihistamine. That should be left for the allergy medicines, in my opinion. Nevertheless, this product may certainly work in your household and if you'd like to try it, here is a link for a $1.00 coupon http://h5.sml360.com/-/e3he
December Photo Challenge: Day 14; Joy
Photo copyrighted by Jennifer Miller
Dec 14th's photo challenge was Joy; fitting since that's this week's advent. What is joy and how does one even photograph it?
The youth at church put on a play about finding Christmas. They looked in the kitchen where a mother was baking cookies, they sought it in presents under the tree, they searched charities. As you may have guessed, Christmas was found by remembering Jesus. G was cast as an angel, and while she didn't have any lines, she got to be in the manger scene towards the end. Then they sang the song "The Angels Sang" which is when I got the group photo. G (and all the kids) did great, despite being extra nervous. We could even hear her little voice amongst the singers.
Back to what is joy. G wanted to sing in the Easter program last spring. She practiced the song and did well at rehearsals. On the day of, she got super anxious and didn't sing. She stood up there with her peers, but covered her eyes the whole time waiting for the torture of watchful eyeballs to be over. It was actually kinda cute. She was afraid that was going to happen again today, but it didn't. We are proud of her for facing her fear and partaking in the role she signed up for. She's grown and matured...and that's joy for any parent to observe.
